Astral Projection was a personal painting done with the intention of challenging myself to illustrate a character in a dynamic pose. Inspired by the spell Astral Projection from Dungeons and Dragons, I wanted to illustrate the moment a character projects into the Astral Plane. Experimenting with dramatic perspective allowed me to use the character’s foreshortened hand as a compositional element that helped crop the piece as I painted this illustration I slowly built up texture and value, choosing deliberately where to emphasize more detail and rendering. This painting was the recipient of the Spirit Award in the Bill L. Parks Gallery.
